The 5 Longest Running U.S. TV Shows!. So getting a show on TV is no easy task.
First you have to pitch your show idea to numerous networks.
Then if one likes your idea and agrees to produce it, you most likely get a small contact for just a few episodes or maybe one season.
If your ratings are good, they will most likely renew your contact to keep the show running.
So to have a show that lasts for more than a decade is a massive achievement.
So in this list ill be showing you the 5 longest running TV shows,
and as always id like to give a big shoutout to viewer Jose Cuevas for suggesting this video.

Lassie is a classic show and despite starting in 1954 and ending in 1971, most people will recognize the name.
The show centered around a loyal intelligent collie named Lassie.
She would usually recuse or assist her human family and somehow save the day.
The dog that played lassie was actually a male collie called Pal.
However since the show ran for 17 years, Pal had to be replaced.
In fact a total of 9 different dogs played Lassie during its 17 year run.
Each dog however was a direct descendant of Pal.
Lassie was such a big hit that she even got a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
4) South Park
Created by Trey Parker & Matt Stone in 1997, South Park is one of the first mainstream cartoons with dark & adult humor.
Interestingly the first ever episode of South Park was made using stop animation.
The characters where drawn on a piece of cutout card, and moved by hand frame by frame.
However after the pilot episode they switched to using computer software to do the animation.
South Park is still running today, having been on the air for 19 years.
The show is famous for its dark humor, while it has offended many different groups its also had a big cultural impact.
So much so that Brooklyn College even offers a course called South Park and Political Correctness.
3) Law & Order
Even if youre not a fan of Law & Order, you will almost certainly recognize its catchy theme tune.
It first hit our screens way back in 1990 and had been on the air for a whole 20 years before it ended.
The show focused on a simple recipe.
Half the show was based on investigating a crime, while the other half was about prosecuting the offenders.
With such a long life span, the cast kept changing and many spin off versions where made too.
Spin offs such as Law & Order special victims unit, criminal intent, and even an LA & UK version.
For my more mature viewers, here is a blast from the past.
GunSmoke was a western show set in Kansas in the late 1800's.
Originally it started at a radio show back in 1952 but made the leap to TV in 1955.
Almost immediately it was a big hit among viewers.
During its second season it became one of the top 10 shows in america.
It quickly gained more popularity and took the number one spot up until 1961.
From there on it slowly started declining, but still remained in the top 20.
In 1975 CBS finally pulled the plug after 20 years.
1) The Simpsons
By far the longest running show on TV is the Simpsons.
The lovable cartoon family from Springfield first hit our screen in 1989.
Now 27 years later and they are still alive and well.
The success of the Simpsons is insane.
Ask any child, teenager or adult what they think of the Simpsons and they most likely will have a positive view.
It's rare for a show to appeal to such a large audience but the shows creators have done a fine job in finding a good balance.
Over the 27 years the show has evolved.
Whilst the characters have remained the same age, the world around them reflects the real world.
Mobile phones, laptops and social networking for example are now commonly found in episodes.
So what does the future hold for the Simpsons.
Well the ratings in recent times have dropped quite a bit.
That's usually an early sign for a show to be cancelled.
However before you get worried, while the show may be on a decline in ratings,
It is still one of FOX's best rated show and a cash cow for the network.
Therefore its unlikely they will be dropping the beloved cartoon anytime soon.
